Congress Awards Gold Medal to 13 Service Members Killed in Afghanistan

Speaker Johnson leads ceremony honoring victims of Kabul suicide bombing

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson led a ceremony this week that posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal to 13 service members killed in the 2021 suicide bombing at the Kabul airport in Afghanistan. Members of both the House and the Senate joined the speaker and the service members’ surviving families at the ceremony.

“Although we can never fully measure your loss, we can and we must memorialize the ultimate sacrifice that was paid,” Speaker Johnson said to relatives of the troops who died in the attack.

President Joe Biden’s chaotic military withdrawal from Afghanistan continues to be a topic of debate within Congress. President Donald Trump signed the U.S. withdrawal agreement with the Taliban in 2020. But, though President Biden could have reversed the former president’s decision before the withdrawal began, the new administration followed through after the Taliban disregarded its own commitments upon which the U.S. withdrawal was contingent.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Speaker Johnson, House Minority Leader Jeffries, Senate Majority Leader Schumer, and Senate Minority Leader McConnell as they head their respective chambers of Congress.
  • For federal legislators as they commemorate the fallen service members.
  • For comfort for Gold Star families as they grieve loved ones who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to the country.
